DHURRI RUGS

Mukesh came to collect us from the Jodhpur Clock Tower in a jeep with fabric sides. We had a bumpy hour long ride to his village where he co-ordinates a collective of dhurri rug makers, an initiative his family has set up to aid the welfare of the rural village makers.

Mukesh and his weavers have a beautiful stock of traditional designs, all with geometric design hints that lend themselves to the weaving process. He is open and excited about the prospect of bespoke designs and briefs, please get in touch with any ideas you want to explore.

He shows us rugs made from three types of materials; cotton, coconut rusk and, amazingly, camel. The cotton is dyed to specific pantones, able to get bright and vivid hues. The coconut is dyed and achieves duller, more rustic colours and the camel is left completely natural – black, grey, brown and white.
